Go, Read.
On this page you will find links to the goodreads pages of books I enjoy reading. Obviously most of them are YA as you read what you write, but there are a few from other genres and styles on there.
Why am I promoting other peoples writing? Because I am a firm believer in reading as much as you can; reading makes you smarter, helps you relax and opens your eyes to new ideas and worlds.
A Thousand Pieces of You – Claudia Gray
This book (and it’s sequels) have the most amazing cover art I have ever seen. Not only that but the stories and characters are well thought out. If you enjoy the science part of science fiction, check it out.
Another series, this one takes classic fairy tales adds a little science fiction and sets it in the distant future. Evil queen from the moon? Cyborg Cinderella? Space ships? Yes please!
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – J K Rowling
This one goes without saying. Excellent world building, intriguing characters and uncomplicated writing, it’s no wonder that it’s the best selling children’s book.
The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
If you haven’t heard of The Hunger Games trilogy, what rock have you been living under? In typical fashion the book is better than the movie (though being able to see the events from other characters “POV” was a nice touch) as it is written from Katniss’ point of view and we see so much more depth to her character.
This book is the first in a quartet that looks at the Greek myth surrounding the sirens. I enjoy most of Amanda Hocking’s writing (including her Tyrelle trilogy) but this quartet spoke to me, not sure why but I love her style.
Poison Study – Maria V. Snyder
Another author who I could ready anything by. The poison study series could be classed as adult as well as YA (somehow it’s in BOTH sections in my local library). I really enjoy the complex relationships between characters and the world building she does that make you question issues on our own world.
Throne of Glass – Sarah J. Maas
Sarah J. Maas is probably more New Adult than YA. I say this after reading both A Court of Mist and Fury and Empire of Storms. New Adult is a bit more MA 15 in terms of romance, so these series are probably for more mature teen readers. Again I love the complexity of her characters, they are hardly ever predictable and the world she has built feels almost real.
I started my Westerfeld addition with his book Uglies (a futuristic sci-fi series), then when I got my hands on Leviathan I was introduced to the incredible genre of steampunk. Oh. Boy. Just read it.
The Fellowship of the Ring – J.R.R. Tolkien
Most people prefer the movies to the books with LOTR but I must disagree. The movies, while wonderful, are so serious, they miss all the light-hearted moments which serve to contrast between the darkness that is creeping over middle earth. If you love the characters from the movies, do yourself a favour and read the books.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis
C.S Lewis is more than just a favourite fiction author of mine. I also really enjoy reading his theology. If I’m totally honest, I still dream of finding Narnia in my wardrobe and if I could have tea with anyone, alive or dead it would be Lewis.
Tamora Pierce started my love of fantasy. I started reading the protector of the small while in primary school and have since then read every book of hers I can get my hands on. Her female characters are strong with out compromising their femininity and her worlds feel so authentic.
If you love high fantasy but struggle with Tolkien THIS IS YOUR SERIES! I stumbled upon this series in my local library (I confess I have a membership to about 4 “local” libraries).
The Name of the Wind -Patrick Rothfuss
Another author that does fantasy so, so well. This series is well written but still easy to read and the characters are complex yet hilarious. I am slowly wasting away waiting for the third and final book but it will be so worth it.
These Broken Stars – Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
If you want science fiction that takes you on a while roller-coaster of emotions, throws you all around space and gives you “all the feels” then the Starbound trilogy is for you. (and maybe also check out Amie Kaufman’s other series with Jay Kristoff – Illuminae)
