So I was looking through a draw this morning and found my journal from when I was completing my Bachelor of Arts. While flipping through the pages I found some drafts of poems that I thought I’d share here. They aren’t fantastic (as they are only first drafts) but I couldn’t help but smile as I read them.
Time
The longer you wait to begin
the more time slips away
It’s bliss to be lost in a dream
but at what cost?
Dead men dream no dreams
Their time does not slip away
so why do the living ignore
and leave things until much too late?
We are inspired but for a moment
but then we go on our way
the universe is revealed to us
but then we put it back in its’s place.
Infinity
Can you feel it?
the pulse of life
Can you feel it?
the song of the galaxy
Can you feel it?
we are flying through space
Can you feel it?
we are made of stars and they of us
Can you feel it?
all of time and space
That bursting moment that cries
I AM!
It falls silent but it’s still there
hidden in our beating hearts
Can you feel it?
Moments
A finger curled around a warm teacup
clink
it returns to kiss its lover before departing
Lazy curls sweep across a pillow
sigh
the rustle of covers as they pull and hug
The warble of magpies on a cool spring morning
crunch
the stones bend to our will, though they don’t lose shape
Feet
My foot, I stare at it from above
this heavy piece of flesh and bones
it takes me places
Far away and close to home
I walk across
soft carpet
cold stone
sharp sticks
It never complains, although its brother does
always limping crying, wanting to be carried
I kick out and it connects with the air
soaring in an arc before coming back to the hard earth
Could it walk me where my heart asks to go so earnestly?
through darkness into the empty air
before plummiting down passed rocks
My foot stares back at me defiant
it’s not going to bend to my will today
Agony
Cold clear dread slips down my spine
crawling like little baby spiders
just hatched
Irises widen like a door opening
the owner peering out from behind
into the silky darkness
Hitched breathing echoing
growling
louder, twisting back in on itself
until so distorted it sounds like a beast
drops of sweat journeying across vast expanses of skin
singular yet part of the herd
hearing gravities call
Fire races through my blood
burning my veins in an agony unfelt
it flits over my stomach
through my lungs
and is expelled
